dezembro de 2009 e especificamente para o dia do evento. ABSTRACT:
Due to the large economic, social and environmental damage caused
by extreme weather events, the focus of this research is to
understand the extreme flood phenomenon occurred in S{\~a}o Luiz
do Paraitinga (S{\~a}o Paulo State, Brazil) 2010 New Year's Eve.
Therefore, SWAT model (a physically base hydrological model) was
used in order to test the hypothesis that land use cover change
that have occurred since the beginning of the occupation period in
the region would have exacerbated the heavy rainfall effect in the
basin. Methodologically, the research was divided into two steps:
                         i) characterization of extreme rain event with respect to the
intensity occurred in the 2010 New Years Eve in S{\~a}o Luiz do
Paraitinga through the analysis of the rainfall and flow time
series; ii) application of the SWAT model to analyze the potential
impact of land use cover change on the Paraitinga River water
discharges pattern. The results showed that the SWAT to simulate
the extreme event of flood occurred in the passage of the years
2009/2010 reproduced satisfactorily the flow rate for the day of
the event and for the period January 1\$^{st}\$, 1984 to
December 31\$^{st}\$, 2011 (historical series). The SWAT model
also enabled to understand that the change pasture to forest
                         (scenario 1 - C1) and pasture to eucalyptus (scenario 2 - C2)
could not have prevented the occurrence of this extreme flood
event, considering the slight decrease in the scenarios simulated
flow for the month of December 2009 and specifically to the day of
the event. However, the simulation allowed to know the water
balance of the scenarios (C1 and C2) for comparison with the
                         baseline scenario.",
